Ida B. Wells was one of the first investigative reporters in this country - I wanted this doll to capture the moment of time where she was the editor of her own newspaper, when she was activated to use her voice and her skills to write about the injustices Black people experienced.

During my research, I scoured through anything related to Ida B Wells on the internet and through digital libraries - I was frustrated, unable to find any visual documentation of Memphis Free Speech newspaper/offices or even of Ida B. Wells with her newspaper. So when asked about my vision for Ida’s photoshoot, I knew the set had to be a newsroom - I needed for everyone to see Ida in her Free Speech newspaper’s office, a place where she used the power of her voice to tell the truth.
